Back to Main Dearer Lamb Prices Add to favourites

The holiday shortened week plus worries about future supplies drove lamb and sheep prices higher in just about every market.

MLA reported that Over the Hooks (OTH) quotes were firm to dearer in all states. Processors are offering rates of up to 500¢ in NSW, VIC and SA; up to 470¢ in WA and 450¢/kg cwt in TAS and QLD.

Saleyard rates also continued along a dearer path on Tuesday. Ballarat, Forbes and Midland were between $5 to $10 dearer for lambs, with top prices of $183, $153 and $141/head respectively.

The Eastern States trade and heavy lambs gained 18¢ and 19¢ from last week to finish at 497¢ and 500¢/kg cwt.

Mutton gained 10¢ to settle at 291¢ in the eastern states and in WA the indicator was 19¢ higher at 261¢/kg cwt.

Going by past recent seasons don’t expect this market to rise too much more. In VIC last year, price averages were flat between Jun-Aug, while in July ‘07 they fell slightly and in July ‘06 prices made small gains. Increased supplementary feeding has flattened traditional heavy winter lamb premiums.
