Back to Main Australian Lentil Production Increases Add to favourites

    Australian lentil production is forecast to more than double this year, when compared with last year’s production. According to STAT pub planted area has increased 17,297ac this season , however is considered the second lowest at planted area in the last 5 years.

    The increase in production is due to considerably higher yields. Yields this year are forecast at 1,115lb/ac, compared with 469lb/ac last year and behind the high if 1,654lb.ac in 2005. Favourable growing contions in lentil producing regions has lead to such strong yields, which is timely given the anticipated increase in export demand this year.

    Ending lentil stocks are projected at 36,800t the lowest level since 2006.

    Australian lentil exports are forecast at 121,400t this season, and it is thought that there will be increased demand from India. The Indian monsoon season has been poor this season, and food production is not secure in the country.
