The weather bureau says the developing El Nino weather pattern shows little chance of slowing down.
El Nino typically brings drier conditions to south east Australia, and farmers could see much less rainfall if the pattern fully develops.
El Nino is caused by warmer conditions over the Pacific, resulting in a shift in weather patterns.
Climatologist Robyn Duell says there's now more chance that it will develop.
"Sea surface and subsurface has been warming since February, it warmed to neutral levels, but over the last two months we're starting to see it warm very close to El Nino thresholds, and it's forecast to continue to warm," she says.
