The CSIRO says while there's potential in agricultural soils to store carbon, there's still much more to be learnt.
Soil carbon is at the heart of the Coalition's climate action plan.
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott wants farmland to deliver more than half of its proposed emissions cuts by 2020.
Michael Battaglia, from the CSIRO's Sustainable Agriculture Flagship, says a lot of research is being done to increase the accuracy of measuring soil carbon.
"We know the potential's large, but we don't really fully understand what's going to be involved in terms of changed practice, what the economic feasibility, what the implications for production and income are going to be with those changes," he says.
"We're trying to come to terms with those issues at the moment."
