Coal action group backs access agreement ruling Add to favourites

Story Added : 12th March 2010

The Caroona Coal Action Group (CCAG) says the Supreme Court's ruling on mining access agreements will force mining companies to behave more responsibly.

The court voided BHP Billiton's access agreements on Liverpool Plains farmland because the company failed to notify the banks, which owned the land.

The New South Wales Minerals Council will lobby the Government to amend the Mining Act and says the ruling threatens mining jobs.

CCAG spokesman Tim Duddy says their claims are dishonest.

"The miner was completely prepared to proceed when the farmer's assets were at risk, now they just need to look at it differently and they need to be responsible to their own environmental standards, and that is all the people of Caroona have ever asked," Mr Duddy said.
