Australia's last tuna cannery is to end production.

The John West cannery at Port Lincoln in South Australia has about 260 staff.

Chief executive of the Southern Bluefin Tuna Association Brian Jeffriess says the decision is a blow but had been expected for some time.

"It's at an end in Australia, it's been phasing down for a long time now," he said.

"In the 1980s there were five tuna canneries in Australia. The whole of rural Australia is going to suffer very badly with the high Australian dollar."

Port Lincoln mayor Peter Davis says the closure comes as no surprise to him and is another hit to the area after recent cuts in catch quotas for southern bluefin tuna.

The cannery plans to end operations in May and move all the work to Thailand.
