A Senate committee recommends the Government legislate how meat is sold and marketed in Australia.
The committee wants the AusMeat system to be extended to all domestic processors in Australia.
The AusMeat system and the language that it uses for marketing ensures consistency in meat processing.
But while meat for export is required by Commonwealth Legislation to come from AusMeat accredited processors and conform to AusMeat requirements, it's voluntary for domestic meat marketers.
The committee also recommends the Government creat a separate country of origin labelling regulations to recognise the origin of ingredients in processed food, as well as where it was processed.
