US President Barack Obama has signalled that the White House will take a tougher approach with China over trade.
Speaking to Congressional Democrats, Mr Obama was asked about America's trade imbalance with China, with one prominent senator accusing Beijing of "international banditry" for not opening trade barriers.
Mr Obama says China has to reciprocate on opening up markets.
"That's a problem and it has to be squarely confronted," he said.
"The approach that we're taking is we're trying to get much tougher about enforcement of existing rules, putting constant pressure on China and other countries."
Mr Obama also wants closer scrutiny of currency rates but he rejected a call for US trade deals with China to be revoked.
