US President Barack Obama says a drop in unemployment is a "cause for hope, but not celebration."
Unemployment in the United States has fallen from 10 per cent to 9.7 per cent - a five-month low.
In January 2009, almost 800,000 people lost their jobs but last month that fell to 20,000.
Mr Obama says it is a modest but welcome improvement.
"These numbers, while positive, are cause for hope but not celebration, because far too many of our neighbours, friends and family are still out of work," he said.
Mr Obama is also warning that the unemployment rate could fluctuate for months to come.
